Abstract:

Using Nam Pyung Gil's(1820-1869) Sanhak Chongyi as my central text, I will examine the transformation by Korean mathematicians of the Chinese mathematics transmitted to Korea from China. Thus I will first analyze the contents of Nam Pyung Gil's text; then I will explore the relationship between its mathematics on the one hand and, on the other, both traditional Chinese mathematics and the Western mathematics transmitted to China beginning from the early seventeenth century. I will finally attempt to characterize in more precise terms the changes or transformations introduced by Nam Pyung Gil.

Keywords:transmission, transformation, Tongsan, Nam Pyung Gil, history of epistemology
