The Effectiveness of a Conceptual Approach to Dental Health Instruction in Elementary School Author: Han-Wen Yen, Lan Lee, Huey-Mei Jeng

Abstract:

Students' dental health is one of the significant subjects of school health. To find out the effectiveness of different approaches to dental health instruction is one of the urgent subjects reeding research.
The purpose of the research was to determine whether there was any change in 4th grade students' dental health knowledge and practice after dental health instruction, and compare the conceptual approach and traditional approach. Also to determine the relationship between the knowledge gained from dental health instruction and behavior change among the students.
The Solomon four group experimental design was used in this study. Six 4th grade classes, a total of 271 students of Lon-An primary School of Taipei City, were randomly selected as the subjects of the study. The data from the questionnaire survey was collected during February and March 1979 and analized by statistical treatment. The following conclusions were made;
1. There is significant difference between the dental health Knowledge and behavior change of the two group of students, depending on whether the 4th grade students have the conceptual approach to dental health instruction or not.
2. There is significant difference between the dental health knowledge and behavior change of the two group of students, depending on whether the 4th grade students have the traditional approach to dental health instruction or not.
3. There is no significant difference between the dental health knowledge and behavior change of the two group students, depending on whether the 4th grade students have the conceptual approach or the traditional approach to dental health instruction.
4. There is a positive relationship between dental health knowledge gained and behavior change of 4th grade students.
5. The correlation between the 4th grade students dental health knowledge gained and behavior the 4th grade students dental health knowledge and dental health practice remains the same health instruction in given or not.
6. The correlation between the 4th grade students dental health knowledge and dental health practice remains the same under both the traditional and conceptual approach to dental health instruction.
